What we are doing...

Manual Turning Movement Counts

Traffic image

Traffic counts (Vehicles (Cars, Light and Medium Trucks, Heavy Trucks, Buses, Pedestrians, etc.) passing through a point, or through an intersection. The data can be recorded in a variety of ways with the use of TFR-2 Gretch boards. Traffic counts can be used in traffic impact studies or evaluation of traffic signal warrants analyses among others.

While administering manual turning movement counts, proper procedures are essential for attaining accurate results. We have a rigorous quality control program in place and all our surveyors receive proper and thorough training to make sure that all client requirements are satisfied.

Data collection options include up to six custom classes per any time period bin to be surveyed. Usually, data is accumulated by fifteen minute intervals. Results are generally presented electronically, in an easy to read format, depending on client specifications.

Licence Plate Surveys / Origin and Destination Studies

Licence Plate Surveys image

These studies are normally conducted through personal interviews, mail interviews, licence plate tracking, or most recently, automatic license plate recognition systems (ALPR). Accu-Traffic Inc. is proud of the fact that ALPR is part of our data collection effort.

We take care of all your requirements and present a cost-effective solution with utmost detail for resource allocation and scheduled delivery dates right from the start. We work with you, starting from the initial concept and going all the way to the closing stages in order to help you get the desired results when you want them and how you want them. We eliminate the guesswork and present clear-cut solutions.

Parking Lot Occupancy and Turnover Counts

Duration and Turnover Surveys

Administration of both the public and private parking supply is essential for maintaining the success of businesses and municipalities. The implementation or installation of dynamic car park guidance systems that reduce wasted time for drivers, searching for lot availability, as well as vehicle pollution are common management tools.

Accu-Traffic Inc can support clients in implementing these solutions through administration of surveys to establish demand, duration of stay, turnover, and abuse of regulations or permit schemes. Detailed results are provided for each vehicle parked. Summary information on a parking zone basis is also offered dependent on client requirements.

Bicycle Counts/Non-motorised surveys

Bicycle Counts image

To better measure the environmental benefits that result from cycling in comparison to the usage of motorized vehicles, make bicycle counts extremely important nowadays. These counts help provide the information about the cyclists’ commuting habits, mode choices and needs. Transportation professionals will be able to track and monitor trends and calculate VMT (vehicle mileage travelled) and associated greenhouse gas emission reductions over time. The data also will assist in planning for bicycle parking at transit stations along with other applications.

Data counts as well as user interviews and delay times measurement at crossing points are core services present combined with data presentation in a variety of formats. Our experience allows us to present recommendations to clients, regarding proper cost-effective techniques for data collection. We understand the specific needs of non-motorised users and take into account key safety issues during survey design.

Automatic Traffic Recorder (ATR) Counts

Automatic Traffic Recorder image

ATR counting is the solution for gathering large amounts of traffic volume data throughout specific timeframe which can range from a more general 24-hour counts to an extended 168+ hours periods. ATR counts are undertaken by means of pneumatic tubes that measure the direction of flow, traffic speed, vehicle classification and other crucial variables.

Automatic Traffic Recorders (ATRs) offer a quick, affordable, and reliable way to collect vehicle data over any period and can be presented in a range of formats to suit individual client requirements.

Automatic traffic count data is used for a variety of purposes to support transport planning and design considerations. It is a highly cost effective method of collecting large volumes of classified and/ or speed data. Accu-Traffic has always been at the forefront of the market for collecting and presenting this data.

Travel Time Studies

Travel image

Travel Time studies are used to document congestion and to quantify of the actual impact of road improvements. They help to monitor the performance of the roadway system, and observe trends in vehicle travel time, delay and congestion during peak travel periods. Most travel time study techniques involve using GPS equipment receivers which are able to automatically record distance, time, and speed at any given time on the road.

The purposes of travel time studies are to identify problem locations in area, determine the level of service of the facility, and provide travel time for economic evaluation of transportation improvement and information for travellers.

Most common techniques for travel time studies are floating-car approach, licence-plate approach and GPS based approach.

Gap, Queue, Left Turn and Delay Studies

Delay is defined as an extra time spent by drivers against their expectation. Delay can have many forms depending on different locations. Accurate estimation of delays has many implications in traffic engineering studies. Transportation planners will use delay to evaluate economic loses, whereas traffic engineers will use delays to determine level of service at signalized intersections. There are several methods of conducting intersection delays: Licence-plate method, sample-counting or cycle-based method.

Spot Speed Studies

Speedometer image

Speed studies are used primarily to determine the distribution of traffic speeds, or vehicle speed/class percentiles, at specific location.

Spot speed – defined as the average speed of vehicles passing a point. It is the mostly used indicator that traffic engineers use to measure the speed that drivers freely select, meaning that spot speed studies are under free flow conditions. Spot speed collection methods include: Radar meters, stop-watch method, loop detector, video detector.

Pedestrian Counts

Pedestrian image

There are many reasons for pedestrian counts. Counts are often required in the street design process as inputs to transport models, for capacity assessments, to measure the attractiveness of different spaces, to estimate route choices or for the appraisal of different design options.

Pedestrians are more difficult to count than motor vehicles or bicycles because their paths are much less constrained. Pedestrians can stand, pace back and forth, use a wheelchair, or walk by in groups with no light gaps in-between them to be detected by a counter.

While automated counting technology for motor vehicles has been in use for many years, automated pedestrian counting technology is less developed. Most pedestrian counts are done manually (see photo), but this method suffers from variations in quality depending on the reliability of the person counting. Automated counting would be preferred if a reliable technology, or group of technologies can be deployed.

Interview Studies

Test image

Urban transport studies include: home interview surveys, commercial vehicle surveys, roadside interviews and public transport surveys.

During all stages of project design, Accu-Traffic works with clients to develop solutions which meet their modelling data requirements while minimising driver disruptions. This includes visiting and reviewing site locations, deploying interview/questioner forms or providing self-completion card designs through the cooperation with local property owners or businesses.

Transit Studies

Transit Studies image

Transit Studies play an important role in evaluation of potential methods and benefits of expanding and optimizing a transportation system.

(Accu-Traffic works with all types of public transport operators (rail, bus, ferry and underground). We are able to mobilize large survey teams to collect extensive quantitative and qualitative data on passengers and/ or level of service delivery. Both count data and travel questionnaires, either completed at stops or during the trip, present a wide range of information for the planning and review of services.)
